High above the Transylvanian Alps stands the dark and foreboding Castle Duckula, for centuries the home of the terrifying, blood sucking Duckula vampires. Terrifying until now...the current Count is a vegetarian vampire with a desire for showbusiness!

Accompanied by his long suffering manservant Igor and his clumsy house-keeper Nanny, Duckula uses his teleporting castle to seek his fame and fortune across the world!

Count Duckula was created by British studio Cosgrove Hall Films as a spin-off from Danger Mouse. In 1984 Nickelodeon acquired the US broadcast rights to Danger Mouse, which became a hit for the channel. After a few years, the Nickelodeon management went to Cosgrove Hall wishing to co-produce a new series. After being shown a number of ideas, the then head of Nickelodeon, Jenny Lebron, spotted a picture of Count Duckula in Brian Cosgrove's office, and said "that's the one I want". As the series went into production one of the writers suggested he become a vegetarian, which added an even sillier concept to the series.

In a move mirroring Duckula's adaptation from Danger Mouse, the characters of Gaston and Pierre were reinvented and given a spinoff series as the now-human Victor and Hugo.

Count Duckula is voiced by David Jason, best known for starring in the hit BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses.

Count Duckula recently made a comeback, appeared in a episode of CBBC's rebooted Danger Mouse series in 2016, which airs on Nickelodeon Germany (Deutschland).

In the UK, Count Duckula originally ran on ITV's children's programming block CITV between 6 September 1988 – 16 February 1993. The series was encored on Nick UK in the late-nineties.

Below is the original Count Duckula (complete with the Thames television ident). Sing-along with the lyrics below!:

Castle Duckula, home for many centuries to a dreadful dynasty of vicious vampire ducks:

The Counts of Duckula.

Legend has it that these foul beings can be destroyed by a stake through the heart or exposure to sunlight.

This does not suffice however, for they may be brought back to life by means of a secret rite that can be performed once a century when the moon is in the Eighth House of Aquarius.

Igor: We need Blood!
Nanny: I'll get it!

The latest reincarnation did not run according to plan.

Both: Oooh!

(singing)

In the heart of Transylvania,
In the Vampire Hall of Fame, yeah,
There's not a vampire zanier than...

DUCKULA!

He won't bite beast or man,
'Cos he's a vegetarian. (Aaaagh!)
And things never run to plan for...

DUCKULA!

If you're looking for some fun,
You can always count upon,
Come and find the one they call...

DUCKULA!

Heh, heh. Count Duckula!
Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh
